Tasman Bay Herbs is our main challenge in life. We live, eat and sleep with it. We enjoy every minute of it and every day brings to light new facets of what we have created. Who are we? Meet Don and YokaDon Grant was a tour driver showing tourists his enthusiasm for his native and beautiful New Zealand when he met Yoka De Houwer, who was escaping a tedious career in computer and international law in Belgium. We met and fell in love. At the end of 1995 we settled in Riwaka, near the town of Motueka in the Nelson region, the place of our dreams. By chance we learned about the local demand for fresh culinary herbs. In March 1996 we became the proud owners of a 2 hectare kiwifruit orchard in Dehra Doon Road, Riwaka, our future culinary herb farm. The neighbours thought we were mad when we started pulling out the kiwifruit. Our passionSaving the New Zealand FalconDon and Yoka have a particular passion for helping to protect New Zealand's native birds of prey, the NZ Falcon (Karearea), Australasian Harrier (Kahu) and NZ Morepork (Ruru). Don and Yoka have been avid supporters of the fantastic work that Debbie Stewart, Noel Hyde and other team members do at Wingspan in Rotorua in trying to protect the birds, in particular the endangered NZ Falcon.
A visit to Wingspan when travelling in the Bay of Plenty region is an unforgettable experience. Visitors are able to view a museum area and sneak previews into the incubation and services area before entering the main aviary – a landscaped all weather walkway. A real highlight at Wingspan is the flying displays of falcon held each afternoon. These free flying falcons are passionately described as 'little spitfires'. You'll might even be lucky enough to have one land on your hand, shoulder or head. Wingspan Birds of Prey Trust was established in 1992 as a charitable trust for the research, captive management, rehabilitation and public awareness of New Zealand birds of prey.
In 2007 Tasman Bay Herbs became a sponsor of one of the aviaries at Wingspan. In late 2008 Don & Yoka produced two posters for sale with all proceeds going directly to Wingspan. We created two magnificent A2 (that is four A4 sheets of paper) fully laminated posters with photos taken by Andrew Warner in Rotorua and the help of gifted graphic artist Jane Reed from SeeReed Communications in Nelson. These posters are very special and show the growth progress of the bird each day from egg to first flight. One is of Millie the NZ falcon (38 days) and the second one is Whisper the Morepork (40 days).
Wingspan are hoping to one day get a Harrier Hawk egg that they can raise and finish the set thereby having all three NZ birds of prey captured in this unique way. We'd love for you to show your support for the important conservation work Wingspan is doing by buying a poster or two. They make lovely gifts and are only $25 each + $5 post and packaging. Only 1,000 copies of each poster have been produced so be in quick! All proceeds go directly to Wingspan.
