Fresh Basil

Basil

Description

Basil has large soft leaves in a vibrant green colour. The flavour is sweet and aromatic, with an uplifting spicy note that is often compared to pepper or aniseed.

Food

It matches beautifully with olive oil, oregano, thyme, garlic, onion, tomato, chilli, pasta, egg, zucchini, capsicum, pizza, and green salads. Basil can be preserved by infusing the leaves into vinegar or oil. It is the star ingredient in pesto.

Health Benefits

Basil is a potent agent against infection, reduces stress, and aids digestion. Basil also has a long history as a valued medicinal herb.

Storage

Punnet

It is sensitive to cold so if stored in the fridge it needs to be in the vegetable drawer, inside original punnet. Use within two days of opening. Basil can be kept at room temperature by standing the stalks in a jar of water, away from direct light.

Culture and History

Basil has been cultivated for over 5,000 years and is an essential ingredient in many traditional Asian and Mediterranean dishes.
